Let me introduce you to Fidencio Sanchez. He is an 89-year-old man from Chicago who sells paletas or to you and me – ice lollies – from a little cart he pushes around the streets, which he has done for the last 23 years – now that is some miles he’s covered!
Sanchez was spotted last week, by a passer-by named Joel Cervantes Macias who says that seeing him broke his heart. In an attempt to help Sanchez out, Joel purchased 20 paletas from Sanchez for $50 before driving away.
Joel later uploaded this photo to Facebook with a message about the respect he had for this man who still worked hard to put food on the table despite being WAY past retirement age.
Of course – the image captured the hearts of hundreds and what Joel decided to do next was extraordinary.
Joel went on to set up a “Gofundme” page designed to generate $3,000 for Sanchez and his wife to help ensure they enjoyed their retirement without the worry – remember Joel and Fidencio were strangers just 48 hours prior to this!
The reason why was simple: “Let’s all pitch in to help make life a little easier and brighten their day” what a fab example of paying it forward!
The page went live on Friday 9th of September, and by Sunday evening, the campaign had received donations of $115,000 from more than 5,600 people – how awesome is that? The Campaign ended at 4.30pm on Monday 19th of September, and as of that time $385,400 had been raised. 😱😱
Cervantes also wrote in the fundraiser description that Sanchez’s daughter, who may have helped the elder couple financially, died this year.
Clearly not one for gluttony nor materialism, Sanchez said that he plans to share the money with his churches and grandchildren. He will continue to work (not as much) and is VERY grateful for the contributions.
This is a real example of a random act of kindness, and with that in mind – what can you do today to make someone’s day just that little bit better? 😁
