Frank Short – Great Elm
Guiding you and your business to success!
Hi, I’m Frank Short.
I set up Great Elm Management Services in 2004 to help businesses keep control of their finances and improve profitability, which was the fore runner to Great Elm Bookkeepers, established in 2014.
The approach that I insist businesses deserve is:
Provision of information at the right time to help you make informed business decisions;
Using that information to build a credible and adaptable business plan that can be used as a springboard for future development; and
- Managing time and resources effectively so you don’t necessarily have to spend all your waking hours in your business.
I have over forty five years of experience as an accountant at various levels. I trained with a London firm of Chartered Accountants and worked in the accounting profession for over eight years, dealing in the main with small family businesses. After leaving the profession I worked in a number of industries as an accountant, including a recruitment agency, a civil engineering company and an engineering consultancy. In 1985 I was appointed as the European Controller for a major US manufacturer, managing a team of accountants and bookkeepers in three European countries. I went on subsequently to fulfil similar roles in two other US manufacturing companies.
I became increasingly interested in business strategy and 1998 I was awarded an MBA from the University of Reading.
In setting up Great Elm, I was keen to provide small business owners with the financial disciplines and accounting information only usually found with major businesses, giving them an advantage over their competition.
For many years I served on the committee of the Yeovil and Mendip branch of the Federation of Small Business and was the Chair of that committee for over four years, and so I understand the problems faced by small businesses.
I am passionate about education and was Chair of Governors at a local primary school. I believe in lifelong learning and everybody in Great Elm receives regular, comprehensive training to further their own development.
Outside of business, I enjoy sport: I was for many years a hockey umpire and coach.
I am a foodie, love shopping for, cooking it and eating it!
Hello, I’m Shelly!
I am the New Business and Marketing manager at Great Elm Bookkeepers, and I am your friendly first port of call when contacting Great Elm.
I have been working for Great Elm since January 2016, where I am enjoying getting my teeth into networking and marketing to raise the profile of Great Elm Bookkeepers in the South West. I am generally a social, people person, which suits the networking atmosphere within Bristol and the South West, but I also enjoy the challenges and rewards of working within the New Business side of the company too. I try to ensure that being the first point of contact for our clients and potential clients, is friendly, welcoming and hope that I am able to show just how trustworthy and caring we are as a business.
I have a huge love of wildlife and animals, in particular horses, and have spent the last 12 years of my life living and working in South Africa, as a Horseback Safari Guide, as well as running my own stable yard, ensuring that clients and their horses are well cared for and loved. I also trained young horses from scratch and retrained ex racehorses straight off the track, so that they could find their forever home. Africa is in my blood and soul, It’s where I met my husband, but unfortunately we had to return to the UK due to the uncertain economic stability of South Africa, and I also bought my EX Racehorse Sharp back to the UK with me, to follow my dreams and rise to the top of competing him in Dressage.
Hello, I’m Sarah,
I have just joined Great Elm as a bookkeeper having spent the last 13 years in the charitable sector. Prior to that I worked in general practice preparing accounts and carrying out audits where I gained my MAAT qualification as part qualified ACA.
It’s great to be part of the friendly and professional team at Great Elm and I’m really looking forward to developing relationships with our clients in the Bristol area and providing them with a service that removes the stress of keeping their accounts up to date so that they can focus, with our help, on making their business successful.
In my spare time I enjoy walking, gardening, swimming, watching rugby, eating out and spending time with my family.
Hello, I’m Julia
I am PA to the management and Office Administrator for Great Elm Bookkeepers.
I only recently joined Great Elm Bookkeepers but already feel part of the quickly growing team. My role is varied and interesting and I enjoy being a point of contact for our clients. I have several years experience of working in a busy office and enjoy organising the day to day running of the office. My favourite part of the day is walking Rolly the dog who has become my new best friend!
I am very lucky to live in the historical city of Wells and enjoy walking around the Mendip hills, in my spare time.
Hello, I’m Lisa
I started working for Great Elm in 2016. I am an Affiliate of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA), currently working towards full membership. Prior to joining Great Elm I worked as a bookkeeper and also as a Finance Manager for several small businesses and a local charity. I currently handle bookkeeping, management accounts and day to day finance for a number of clients, and enjoy working with the varied range of businesses which use Great Elm’s services.
I have a BA Hons Degree from the University of London in English and Drama, and prior to training as an accountant I worked mainly in theatre, including producing and directing small scale touring productions around the UK.
Since moving with my family from London to Somerset in 2006 I am enjoying both the beautiful countryside and being part of a vibrant local community – getting involved with local theatre productions, being a school governor and sometimes finding time to indulge my enthusiasm for baking and gardening.
Hello, I’m Lynda
I am a Bookkeeper at Great Elm Bookkeepers.
I started working from Great Elm Bookkeeps in November 2016 after working in Schools Finance for approximately 15 years. I am AAT (NVQ 4) qualified and have been bookkeeping for nearly 20 years. I recently achieved the Advanced Diploma in Administrative Management also known as the Diploma for School Business Managers (NVQ 5). I usually work Monday to Wednesday out of the Wells office, but do visit clients as required.
I enjoy learning new software packages and bookkeeping for various clients enables me to use various finance packages such as Xero, Quickbooks Online, FreeAgent and Sage. I am also proficient in Excel and use this to manipulate data exported from the finance packages. I enjoy helping others make the most of their businesses by ensuring that their accounts are as up to date as possible and providing them with the necessary management and trading information that they need to enable them to make the correct decisions to progress their business further.
Outside of work, I enjoy walking my Springer Spaniel, gardening and photography. I used to be the accredited photographer for the AMCA (Amateur Motorcycle Association) for the old Avon area.
