I’ve not heard an Englebert Humperdinck song for YEARS – and this karaoke version of ‘Quando Quando’ was definitely worth waiting for (if you don’t know who he is, google him or ask an older female relative!)
Ted Mcdermott is 80 years old and used to be a Redcoat at Butlins so you just know he’ll be a performer who loves entertaining.
He was diagnosed with dementia a few years ago, and as the illness kicked in, his family struggled to cope with the aggressive episodes and changes in the man they knew and loved so much.
His son Simon said: “The more the Alzheimer’s kicked in, the more Dad became violent – both physically and verbally. It was incredibly difficult to manage, and terrifying at times. In the last few years his memory has deteriorated a lot – often not recognising me as his son. It’s a horrible illness.”
But then they discovered that he still loves singing and could remember all the words to his favourite songs!
That’s when his son Simon got into the car, switched on the camera and started singing with his dad… He said: “When we’ve got him singing again he’s back in the room. It’s these moments that we treasure.”
Simon started sharing their father & son karaoke sessions on Facebook on the ‘Songaminute Man’ Facebook page and you can see how much he loves seeing his father enjoy being his old self again. And he’s not the only one!
Millions of people all over the world now watch each video so Ted is on the biggest stage he’s ever been on! The talented pair have also raised over £50,000 so far, for the Alzheimers Society Charity who’ve been fab at supporting Ted’s family to deal with his condition.
