Trekkies all over the world are either dismayed or elated at the latest news. If you’re wondering what the heck a “Trekkie” is then it’s the word for ultimate Star Trek fan. You know, the guys who dress up in the Star Trek gear and talk in Klingon – Mind Boggling!!
US television giant CBS are making a brand new Start Trek series due for release in May 2017 called Star Trek Discovery.
The big news is though that they are casting a female as the leading role – Sonequa Martin Green of The Walking Dead fame – and will be based on a female lieutenant commander instead of the usual captain. Also for the first time, the show will feature a gay character.
Other details revealed about the series include:
- The show will be set 10 years before the original series featuring Captain Kirk and will bridge the gap between 2005 series Enterprise and the Kirk years.
- There will be more aliens than you would usually expect on the crew – it will not be “one person with a bumpy head”. And there will be robots.
- There may be the possibility of seeing younger versions of the characters seen in Kirk’s crew, but not until the second season. There is also the chance to see the character of Spock’s mother, Amanda Grayson, played by Winona Ryder in JJ Abrams’s 2009 big screen adaptation.
To keep you entertained before the new show airs, watch a programme called “Trekkies” on YouTube that gives you a unique insight into Star Trek fans. Stories from people who have converted their dental surgeries into the inside of a Star Trek space ship and a lady who served on the jury of the famous Bill Clinton Whitewater trial in full Star Trek costume. It’s highly entertaining.
I was never a Star Trek fan, that is until they cast Chris Pine As Captain Kirk in the movie Franchise, and I must say I am hooked, so when/if this series finally airs, I will definitely be tuning in to see what it’s like!!
Not sure how to say this in Klingon… but Have a fabulous Valentine’s Day all you Trekkies!!
