Since entering into the financial world and working as a New Business and Marketing executive for a Bookkeeping company, its become rather apparent that it’s hard finding clients who understand that every business needs a Bookkeeper. Clients who will work with you year after year. It takes a long time to build up trust, we are after all asking them to open up their company records and divulge their financials. When a client who is just getting started takes up our service, they will more often than not call us frequently for advice, I know I would, as I certainly don’t have the in-depth knowledge of bookkeeping that the experts have! The difficulty I find, is that most new businesses or start ups have been advised that they need an Accountant from the get go, and so off they trot to find one, not realising the full costs involved and also that Accountants may not offer the services of a Bookkeeper. When they then realise or are advised that they need a Bookkeeper too, often they cannot justify the new cost on top of an accountant, and they also sometimes don’t realise that Bookkeepers work in partnership with many Accountants. Trying to explain this to our clients can be tricky. An accountant is a critical position to fill. A really good accountant can be a big factor in your success. A really bad one can cost you a lot of money and steer you in the wrong direction.
When my husband arrived from South Africa, and made the decision to start up his own business, rather than work for a company as an employee, he also knew that he would need a good trustworthy and reputable Accountant, so he did what most people do and started to frantically google Accountants, trying to figure out which would be the best fit for his Handyman Company that is a Limited Company. We soon realised that it wasn’t the best idea, and if anything it confused us even more! The problem was that Accountants are so varied with who and what type of companies that they deal with, it’s not a One size helps all. However we are pretty lucky, as I work for a bookkeeping company – Great Elm Bookkeepers – and it became very apparent that they could help us with all our needs and in knowing our numbers, so that at any one time we know how the company is doing, we also know that all our records are up to date, allowing us to make decisions when looking to grow the business, and Great Elm Bookkeepers work strategically with a number of Accountants in the South West, so at a more affordable price on a monthly basis our company financials are up to date, we get all the management information we need to make those key decisions at the time and then at Year End, Great Elm will use an Accountant that is compatible for our company to enable our Year End Accounts to be submitted timely and cost effectively.
When you as a client are looking for a good Accountant, why not start by asking your Bookkeepers, they know your business, and they will be able to advise and guide you towards the Accountant that is most compatible with your company. They want what is best for your business and to enable you to grow your business so that it becomes as successful as you ever dreamed of!
